The purpose of this project is to get familiar with the DataCanvas API. This API gives real-time access to ~100 environmental sensor nodes in 7 cities. These nodes measure air quality, dust, light, sound, temperature, and humidity. As a simple proof-of-concept, this project maps the dust sensor reading to the density parameter of SuperCollider’s Dust UGen. Every 4 seconds of sound corresponds to 30 minutes of data, for a scaling factor of 450. This allows us to listen to a day’s worth of data in a little over three minutes.
To be honest, this doesn’t sound that great at the moment, but that was to be expected for such a simple design. The next steps are the use of additional sensors and the development of more complex mappings and synths.
